Lawrence I. Rand, MD
Board Certified Ophthalmologist
Lawrence I. Rand, MD is a board certified ophthalmologist and specialist in diabetic eye care. Dr. Rand received his medical degree from Columbia College of Physicians and Surgeons and completed his residency training at Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary.
He received a fellowship from the Seeing Eye Foundation to do research on diabetic retinopathy. Dr. Rand completed a joint fellowship in diabetes, medical retina, and epidemiology at the Joslin Clinic and the National Eye Institute in Bethesda, MD.
Dr. Rand's work has helped to prove that laser surgery is effective in preventing blindness from diabetic retinopathy and reducing visual loss from diabetic macular edema. From 1978-1987, Dr. Rand served as Director of Eye Research at Joslin Diabetes Center, and from 1987- 1989, he was Executive Director of the William P. Beetham Eye Unit. He has been a consultant and advisor to the American Diabetes Association, Juvenile Diabetes Foundation, and The National Eye Institute.
Dr. Rand was a principal investigator for the Diabetes Control and Complications Trial and the Early Treatment Diabetic Retinopathy Study (ETDRS), both nationwide clinical trials sponsored by the National Eye Institute at the National Institute of Health.
Dr. Rand has published in numerous scientific journals and textbooks and has lectured nationally and internationally on diabetic eye disease.
