Eye injuries can happen in an instant. Pointy props added to a costume, glittery makeup, or face paint can end up causing an eye injury. A few simple steps can reduce your risk of injury this Halloween. Below are some dos and don’ts to keep in mind this Halloween. Halloween eye safety dos and don’tsDon’t apply glitter near your eyes: Glitter around the eyes can migrate into the eye and scratch your cornea. Even cosmetic glitter can be harmful if it gets into your eyes. The same thing goes for face paint. Avoid paint that contains glitter. Do wear a mask that allows good vision: If you or your little ones are wearing a mask, make sure it does not obstruct vision. Masks that interfere with vision can increase your risk of a fall, which can cause serious injuries. Don’t wear costume contact lenses: Costume contact lenses may make your eyes look scary, but they can cause a lot of damage. These costume lenses do not require a prescription and can lead to eye problems. According to the American Academy of Ophthalmology, costume contact lenses can lead to corneal abrasions, eye infections, and even blindness in severe cases. Do use hypoallergenic eye makeup: Eye makeup may give you the look you are going for this Halloween, but make sure it does not give you something you don’t want, such as a rash or allergic reaction. Make sure to use hypoallergenic eye makeup to prevent irritation. Also, do not apply eyeliner on the inside of the eyelash line, which can also lead to irritation. Don’t share Halloween eye makeup: It is OK to share your Halloween candy, but keep your eye makeup to yourself. Sharing eye makeup can spread bacteria and lead to an eye infection. Bacteria from makeup brushes or mascara wands can pass from person to person if you share them. Do remove all eye makeup before going to bed: Leaving eye makeup on after your Halloween festivities are over can irritate your eyes. You may rub your eyes overnight without realizing it and get the makeup in your eyes. Use makeup remover to get the makeup off. Do not rub vigorously since that can irritate your skin. Don’t apply eyelash extensions yourself: Eyelash extensions should be left to the professionals. Applying your own eyelash extensions can cause damage to the lashes, or you can poke yourself in the eye. Do bring a flashlight for trick or treating: Making sure you have some light on those dark Halloween nights can prevent tripping. Carry a small flashlight to use, especially when approaching walkways or stairs. Don’t bring pointy objects as props: Certain props may make the costume. What pirate doesn’t want a sword? But pointed props can injure your child or someone else if they poke them in the eye. Skip the props or choose ones that are made from a soft material. Do have fun!Halloween can be a fun time of year. Dressing up in a scary costume is part of the holiday. Take safety precautions, watch your step, and have a great time!
